Site-specific or single-vineyard has been one of the most notable trends of 21st century Champagne, a region traditionally known for the blended nature of its wines. The expansion of the single site champagne category has been exponential. This phenomenon has been of special interest to me ever since I wrote my Master of Wine dissertation on the subject in 2006. For my research I could merely find two-dozen single-vineyard champagnes. Ten years later I can count more than 150 site-specific wines from at least 75 producers. Champagne is on the move, but where is the paradox taking it?
