The new sweet ‘Rich’ for Clicquologists

Veuve Clicquot launched its new, sweet champagne Rich NV just in time for the beach season. With this soft and round champagne, Veuve Clicquot is joining houses like Moët & Chandon, Lanson, and G.H. Mumm for a new wave of sweet champagnes destined to attract new consumers into the world of champagne and finding new uses for it.

Sweet champagne’s raison d’etre is lent from history, when champagne used to be a sweet wine. In countries like Russia, drinkers themselves dosed the champagnes with sugar to fit their personal taste. Veuve Clicquot chef de cave Dominique Demarville went for a rather high dosage: 60g/l. “We trialled several levels of dosage, and at 60g/l the balance worked perfectly.”

The wine is designed for mixology at bars and nightclubs. Veuve Clicquot recommends it to be served on ice with various spicing ingredients, such as mint, cucumber, lime peel, or pineapple, for a crisp summer day’s refreshment. The house serves it in beautiful mouth-blown Lehmann Jamesse Collection Grand Blanc glasses. The bottle design is just as attractive as only Clicquot can offer.

Veuve Clicquot Rich NV

Soft, mellow yet deep nose of red fruits and spices complemented by a mild bisquity note. Round, fleshy body with soft acidity and long sweet finish. The wine is unusually sweet in today’s standards but the balance still works, and it does not seem overly sweet. When served on ice, it picks up further freshness.
